Hayes Station
Men and boys of the Little River Regiment, commanded by Colonel Joseph Hayes, gave their lives on this site for the freedoms we have today. On November 19, 1781, Loyalists commanded by “Bloody Bill” Cunningham were surrounded and captured. Several were spared, but 18 were hanged or brutally murdered while still bound. Colonel Hayes, 18-year-old Captain Daniel Williams, and his 14-year-old younger brother Joseph Williams were among those hanged or savagely killed with swords. The Hayes Station Monument was dedicated by the Henry Laurens Chapter of the DAR in 1910 to the memory of those who gave their lives here in a manner that clearly reveals the hatred and inhumanity of civil war. These men and boys gave their lives in the cause of Liberty. Let us remember them and their sacrifice so that they will never be forgotten in the hearts of all who value what America means to us today.
