Battle of Stono Ferry, June 20, 1779

After an unsuccessful attack on Charleston, British Brigadier General Augustine Prevost and his 2,500-man army started their withdrawal back to Savannah. He left the 71st Highlanders, Hessian forces, and Loyalists, altogether 850 troops, on the mainland at Stono Ferry to cover the withdrawal, under commander Lieutenant Colonel John Maitland. General Benjamin Lincoln advanced on the Stono Ferry outpost with 1,200 men to the assault on June 20. In a brisk fight for more than one hour, Lincoln withdrew as he saw British reinforcements pouring across the inlet.

This new acquisition of 2-acres at Stono Ferry will bring the total battlefield land preserved by the Battleground Trust to 19.7 acres.
