The September 1781 Battle of Eutaw Springs was the last major battle in South Carolina. In a hotly contested battle lasting five hours, the Patriots and British both suffered heavy casualties. Patriot Major General Nathanael Greene lost 692 men which included 251 killed, 367 wounded, and 74 missing (including 17 officers killed and 43 wounded). Of 2,100 engaged, the Southern Army suffered 33% casualties. British Colonel Alexander Stewart lost 693, which included 85 killed, 351 wounded, and more than 500 missing and captured. The British suffered their highest percentage of losses of any battle of the entire Revolutionary War. This battle, once and for all, broke the British arc of backcountry outposts, their ability to maneuver around it, and confined the British to the South Carolina coast.

The Battleground Trust is contracted to acquire a fourth property at Eutaw Springs. This 4-acre property is in the footprint of the British camp, the location of the most severe fighting in the battle. This well-situated property also contains three witness trees. Your donation will help fund this important acquisition and allow us the initiate the interpretation of this important battle.
