Tom Oblak

Gun Captain, 5TH Co., 4TH SC Regiment, Artillery

Thomas (Tom) Oblak is retired from the United States Army and IBM. He served a total of 25 years, 16 years as an enlisted infantryman and Infantry Officer, and another nine years in the Army Acquisition Corps doing Research and Development. At IBM, he worked for 15 years as a Project/Program Manager and department manager.

An interest in military history led him to volunteer at Historic Camden and become certified as a tour guide for the Historic Site and the Battleground. In his first year of volunteering, he was recognized as Historic Camden’s volunteer of the year. Tom later got involved with the SCBPT’s loan of four period cannons and became “Gun Captain,”, the person responsible for organizing and leading the cannons for educational events.

He and his team have developed the Artillery Demonstration team into a high-quality unit that performs for educational opportunities, commemorations, historical events, and entertainment about the Revolutionary War. Ask him, and he’ll tell you he’s not a reenactor — he’s a first-person demonstrator with a team of volunteers that stimulates the public interest in the Revolutionary War. Tom leads dozens of events a year.

Tom is originally from Sherman Oaks California and has three sons, two of whom are on active duty in the Army and Marine Corps. He and his wife moved to Camden, SC in 2015.
