Research is a critical part of the work we do, whether on behalf of an organization like the National Park Service or for a municipality or county.

Our research is typically funded by grants and is therefore directed by the funding agency — but we’re careful to take on projects that also serve another purpose. Research funding allows us to study battles and locate battlegrounds, which means every project we do helps us determine which valuable tracts of South Carolina land need preserving.

Working with the SC 250th Commission, we undertook a project to transcribe Revolutionary War-era claims, made to the British Government by Loyalists, for financial losses they incurred because of the War. These claims — numbering more than 4,800 pages in total — provide unbelievably rich detail about who the Loyalists were, where they lived, what they owned, and what they lost.
